The Lantern Sessions, Vol. I is out

The first gathering of the Lantern Sessions films is out on Bellfounder — five sets filmed by candle-lantern in the Bristol undercroft, one camera, no retakes, the room's own echo left in. The photograph above is the morning after the second night, marking up the dance book before the drive home.

Vol. II films at the Tallow Hall this winter; the Candlemas concert is the session.

Bess's wheel, rebuilt

The consort's hurdy-gurdy has spent the winter with the luthier Ines Falk, who has given it a new wheel, a quieter dog and a keybox that no longer sticks in damp chapels. It came back the week of the first Broken Music rehearsals, which is why A Civil Noise now has a drone movement.

Ines's workshop notes — a small essay on why the loudest instrument in the room is the hardest to keep honest — will appear in the next Dance Book fascicle.
